Hot off the press
TIME IS TICKING ON THE FORECLOSURE.COM SCHOLARSHIP
The deadline to apply for the Foreclosure.com Scholarship Program is Dec. 1, 2011.
Undergraduate students have only about five weeks to apply for their chance to earn a share of the $9,000 Foreclosure.com gives out annually.
The scholarship program was started in 2009 to help counterbalance some of the economic troubles that students specifically face. The real estate market and economy as a whole have created some very serious challenges all over the globe and Foreclosure.com wants to do its part to assist students in achieving their educational goals despite these trying economic circumstances.
To apply for the 2011 Foreclosure.com Scholarship Program, applicants must submit an 800- to 2,000-word essay regarding distressed property investment. (Read the full essay question here.)
Essays will be judged by a panel of distressed property experts and a total of five awards will be given out: One $5,000 grand prize and four $1,000 prizes for the runners up. But the reward isn't for the winners alone.
"This scholarship program has been a wonderful experience for all of the administrators at Foreclosure.com and the outside panel of judges," said Foreclosure.com Director of Education, Linda Yates. "The entries have been competitive and the creativity of the essays have been first class. We look forward to reviewing the rest of the submissions prior to the December 1 deadline and announcing the winners shortly thereafter."
The scholarship program is open to all undergraduate students studying any discipline. In addition the essay, applicants must visit the Foreclosure.com Scholarship page to read the full scholarship rules and complete the online entry form.
If you are a college student (graduate, high school and law students are not eligible), please don't miss this opportunity, or if you know a student in your life who could benefit from some financial assistance, please pass this information onto them. Time is running out, though, so get working on your entries as soon as possible!
Full scholarship and entry process information can be found here.

Our success stories
PATRICK BUTLER'S DREAM HOUSE
Perhaps you've seen Patrick Butler around on Foreclosure.com.
Not only is he the head of our agent services department, but he's also led several webinars on short sales and first-time buyer success.
Well, Patrick recently put his money where his mouth is by scoring an amazing short sale property deal of his own.
Sound like a good deal? Wait till you hear the rest of his story.
"The market value was $317,000," he revealed, "and the loan, which was shorted, was for $499,000."
That equates to a savings of somewhere between 21 and 50 percent, depending on the market value you take into consideration; in other words, Patrick scored the deal of a lifetime!
"I love everything about the house," Patrick said. "It was built in 2008 and is fully upgraded with granite kitchen and baths, stainless steel appliances, mouldings and top-of-the-line fixtures."
So, we know the house is amazing, but what about the neighborhood?
"The community is a gated boater's community in which every owner has a deeded boat dock complete with electricity and water," said Patrick. "There is also a beautiful pool, gym and clubhouse."
Thanks in part to Foreclosure.com, which he used to stay on top of the newest properties that cropped up and learn about smart short sale investment, Patrick was able to find and secure his dream house.
"It was the educational aspect of Foreclosure.com that paid off the most," Patrick told us. "I have become fully versed in the Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives (HAFA) program, which is a well thought out short sale program. I used the eligibility requirements to identify a property that would have a high chance of closing and closing quickly."
If you'd like to experience similar success in the lucrative arena of short sales — and in record time to boot — follow Patrick's advice: "Look at properties that are owned by the primary resident as opposed to an investor [and choose] properties with only one lien — the primary mortgage."
You can learn about the HAFA program and how to use it to close your short sale quickly right here on Foreclosure.com.

BOO! DO SOMETHING SCARY
As I brainstormed for something to share with you in this monthly column, I started to reflect on fear and it's ability to stop us in our tracks or empower us if we choose. Not long ago I read a thought that suggested that we do one thing a day that scares us. I have thought a lot about that quote and I have been trying to practice that in my life.
Doing one thing a day that scares us, help us grow. If we were to continue to stay in our comfort zone we would never grow. In fact, we would atrophy. If you're not climbing, you're sliding! This is what has recently happened to me as we have been trying to implement video into our training here at Foreclosure.com.
It has been something I had wanted to integrate, but I have to admit it scared me. Being on camera is intimidating. However, the more I jump up and run to the camera the more comfortable and confident I get.
What is one thing you could do today that scares you? Perhaps you have been looking for a great investment property, have the funds to invest, but you are allowing the doom and gloom reported everyday to stop your action. Now is the time to embrace your fear and let it help you grow.
We are here to give you tools, data and training so that you can be successful.
Happy Halloween and best of luck conquering your fear!
