Chesilhurst is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 1,634, reflecting an increase of 114 (+7.5%) from the 1,520 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 6 (-0.4%) from the 1,526 counted in the 1990 Census. New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Chesilhurst last among the towns rated in its 2008 rankings of "Best Places to Live" in New Jersey (placing at # 566).
Chesilhurst was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 26, 1887, from portions of Waterford Township and Winslow Township, based on the results of a referendum held on October 18, 1887.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Chesilhurst borough had a total area of 1.720 square miles (4.453 km2), including 1.718 square miles (4.449 km2) of land and 0.002 square miles (0.004 km2) of water (0.09%).
The borough borders both Waterford Township and Winslow Township.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,634 people, 582 households, and 376 families residing in the borough. The population density was 951.2 per square mile (367.3/km2). There were 621 housing units at an average density of 361.5 per square mile (139.6/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 42.35% (692) White, 46.39% (758) Black or African American, 0.43% (7) Native American, 0.86% (14) Asian, 0.00% (0) Pacific Islander, 6.98% (114) from other races, and 3.00% (49) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.57% (189) of the population.
There were 582 households out of which 18.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% were married couples living together, 18.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.24.
In the borough, the population was spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 31.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
